It’s that time of year again, when all we want to do is be
out on the beach and enjoying the sun! However, we often forget there’s a price
we pay for being in the sun!
Did you know that there are more than 2 million people in
the Untied States diagnosed with skin cancer a year! That’s an awful lot of diagnoses
that can be prevented! In fact, skin cancer is the most preventable type of
cancer. How do we decrease this number? EASY! The American Society of
Dermatologic Surgery teamed up with Neutrogena’s Choose Skin Health Campaign,
to spread the word to help fight cancer and save lives with educating people on
early detection and empowering them to practice and follow sun safe behaviors that
can and will save their lives!
So what can you do to protect yourself from the sun? Glad
you asked (even if you didn’t ask, I’m going to tell you anyways!) According to
Neutrogena Choose Skin Health Campaign here is some SIMPLE (yes I used the word
simple) steps that can prevent you from being one of the two million Americans diagnosed
with skin cancer this summer:
- AVOID UNNECESSARY EXPOSURE TO THE SUN
-
Peak hours of the sun are between 10 am and 4pm,
try to avoid being in the sun within that time frame.
-
Avoid using tanning or UV tanning
booths.
-
Seek shade! Doesn’t matter where
you seek it, it may be under an umbrella, under a tree, or in a canopy, always
try to stay in the shade!
- ALWAYS WEAR SUNSCREEN
-
Dermatologist recommends using a
SPF of 30 or higher with a broad-spectrum UVA/UVB protection.
-
Properly apply the sunscreen.
Which means apply 1 ounce (2 tablespoons) 30 minutes before going outside.
-
Reapply! Always reapply every two
hours, or if you are swimming or sweating excessively immediately!
-
If you are going to be outdoors
swimming or sweating excessively, look for water-resistant or sweat-resistant
sunscreen.
-
Put those shades on! Wear UV
blocking sunglasses to protect your eyes.
- COVER UP
-
Wear a wide-brimmed hat and UV protective
clothing (UPF measures the UV protection offered by clothing).
-
Wear UV-blocking sunglasses to
protect your eyes!
Simple right?
Over summer I tend to spend a lot of time at the tide-pools, in fact its one of my favorite place to be. These skin care tips really come in handy, especially since I want my skin to look beautiful and not cause me cause me cancer.

I could not agree more. I do not leave the house without SPF :) it's been a habit since high school because of my teacher showing us skin aging due to sun damage!
